Abstract: With the characteristics of high reliability, high quantitative precision, low cost and high efficiency, the time of flight diffraction (TOFD) technique is widely applied to many aspects such as boiler, pressure vessel and pressure piping inspection since 1970s. In this paper, the application of TOFD technique in china is introduced and discussed. The principle of TOFD is introduced, in which the advantages and disadvantages are pointed out. And the large project cases in china that used the TOFD technique are enumerated. Then, the application and the problems of the TOFD technique used in thin-wall plate, high-thickness pressures vessels and the power station boilers are discussed in detail. Compared with other ultrasonic techniques, the TOFD is fit for pressure vessels and boils much more. Finally, the existing standards and development trend of standards about TOFD in china are enumerated. Furthermore, we believe that homemade research on key technique and equipment is the important development direction in future in China.

【AE003】Selected Highlights from 50 years of NDE Evolution

Abstract: NDE for flaw detection/characterization has undergone an evolutionary change over the past 50 years. In the U.S. it has moved from a strategy of zero defects to a damage tolerant strategy in which it is assumed that the part will contain defects but that they will be less than a critical size as defined by material properties and expected stress levels encountered in service. It has also been realized that considerable cost benefits can be obtained by moving NDE considerations for a part to the front of the manufacturing process and incorporating NDE into design and process control. In this talk, selected events from the past 50 years that have been influential in promoting this paradigm shift will be noted, and highlights of research advances that resulted from them and that form a part of the new paradigm will be discussed. These advances have resulted in new computational tools (simulations of the NDE process) for UT, X-ray, and EC as well as new instrumentation particularly suited to quantitative process control and field measurements. Applications of both will be discussed. Finally, a few words on a world-wide collaboration in NDE, the World Federation of NDE Centers, will be discussed.

Abstract: In the detecting of large-sized vessel, because lack of acoustic emission channels, the manner connecting AE units was adopted. According to the location principle, the number of channels was calculated. The different version AE units of the same manufacture were connected as one unit. The detecting result combining with vessel configuration and using condition were analyzed. Thus it can be seen that connecting AE units to detect large-sized vessel is feasible, and the detecting effect is ideal.

【AE006】Sound Source Location Error Analysis of Acoustic Emission Technique for Thick-wall Pressure Vessel

Abstract: Acoustic emission (AE) technique has been widely applied to pressure vessel and piping inspection. Sound source location analysis plays an important role in the whole AE inspection and evaluation process, how to improve the location precision to an extent is the research focus all over the world. For AE sound source location of pressure vessel and piping, the arrival-time difference location method is mainly used, i.e. compute arrival-time difference which sound source signals arrive at different sensors to determine the sound source location. If an active sound source is on the internal surface or in the wall not on the external surface of thick-wall pressure vessels, the location error obviously exists because of the wall thickness influence. In this paper the sound source error for thick-wall pressure vessels is deduced in detail, the sound source location error formulas are founded and the change law of location error with the wall thickness is analyzed and discussed too. The results indicate that the location errors in the experiment are both in good agreement with those in theory with a maximum relative error of 7.12%. Furthermore, when the thickness is less than 600mm, it is proposed that about 200 mm radius area around the source location should be rechecked by normal nondestructive testing methods to determine the actual source location by AE inspection.

Abstract: This paper introduced the basic theory, purpose and characteristics of the acoustic emission testing technology. We summarized the practical applications of top and bottom head penetration pieces areas of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) which is unapproachable, using emission testing technology and stabilizer electric heating elements penetration pieces areas using acoustic leakage monitoring technology during the major loop systems hydrostatic test period at PSI and ISI of PWR nuclear power plant.

Abstract: The Reactor Pressure Vessel Inspection Machine (TIME machine) comprises ultrasonic inspection system, video inspection system and mechanical machine. These systems and equipment can not be separated from the work of the control system. To comply with the special requirements of inspection of the Nuclear Power Plant, S-UMAC has been developed by the joint venture CITEC and TECNATOM, a Spanish company, as the control system of the reactor pressure vessel inspection system. In this paper, the general characteristics of S-UMAC has been introduced and analyzed.

Abstract: This paper describes the use of inspection methods of inner, outer and latent defects of urea reactors. The effectiveness of different inspection methods are discussed and validated. Results showed that the comprehensive application of acoustic emission evaluation, γ-ray examination and phased array examination can detect urea reactor girth and laminates serious flaws, which may be the best means of detection method for latent defects in multilayer urea rectors.

Abstract:The acoustic emission(AE)test method was used and the characteristics of different phases of hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) in 20R mild steel were analyzed. Artificial neural network was used to recognize the pattern of HIC. Practical test showed the above method could test the cracks that common method could not test. The result of pattern recognition was rather accurate, and provides a reference method for practical engineering inspection.

Abstract: The fatigue crack growth experiment was carried out at room temperature by the standard SEB(3) specimens of 40Cr steel , the distribution of the surface magnetic field of the specimen under same load and different cycle numbers (N) was investigated. By analyzing relations between the magnetic signals and the crack propagation life, the cumulative fatigue damage, we established a new damage parameter model use magnetic signals. According to this model, we can evaluate the residual life of ferromagnetic components excellently. It is a basic research for the application of magnetic memory testing technology in aspects of early damage and residual life assessment of ferromagnetic materials.

Abstract: Some important specifications of Ultrasonic Examination (UT) for Welded Joints of pressure equipment offered by ASME BPVC Code are outlined, including the quantifying requirements of UT procedures, the type and characteristics of the calibration blocks, the plotting and form of the DAC curves, and the demands on indication characterization and measurement and classification in the acceptance criteria and so on. A comparison is made between the ASME Code and the Chinese Standard JB4730, aimed at providing a reference for the UT standard of pressure vessels linking or harmonizing with international standard.

Abstract: Internal defects of isotropic pyrolytic carbon (IPyC) were studied by the polarized light microscopy (PLM) . PLM observations show that the internal defects in the IPyC include three main types of anisotropic inclusions, cracks and isotropic inclusions. Ultrasonic tests show that the pulse-echo technique is a valid method to detect internal defects in the IPyC products.

Abstract: By a special integrated eddy current and magnetic memory probe, a new technique integrated the advantages of eddy current testing and magnetic memory method has been developed and presented in this article. An experiment has been carried out on a steel specimen during a tensile test. The result shows that, the integrated eddy current testing and magnetic memory method technique can evaluate all the four stages of the specimen: normal, stress-strained, damaged, damaged and stress-strained. So, this new technique can be introduced for the health monitoring of remanufacturing industry and provides more helpful information than the single one.

Abstract: For the improvement of the testing efficiency, real-time testing ability, testing stability, a multi-channel ultrasonic testing device has been developed with the modern ultrasonic testing technique, computer and electrical sciences, modern single processing methods. The design methods on both hardware and software of this device have also been presented. The practical testing results showed that the device has high agreements in each channel, superior performances in the emission and receiving system, higher repeat frequency up to 10kHz in the 4-channel mode. The design with FPGA could satisfy various kinds of the field inspection requirements.

Abstract: Risk based inspection (RBI) technology is an optimized strategy of inspection established on the pursuit of the unification of safety and economy of the special equipment. Gradually since 2003, RBI technology has been carried out and promoted in China. In this paper, the application of RBI technology in China was introduced, the principle of RBI technology and its implementation in petrochemical, electric power, shipbuilding industry and offshore oil platform system was presented, and its localization problems especially the RBI software problems and the support by national laws and regulations were discussed in detail. Meanwhile, it was indicated that there are many fields in which RBI technology has not applied as well as it has a good prospect in China.

Abstract: Follow detail Ultrasonic inspection requirement of ASME and RSEM code, Reactor Pressure Vessel need to performance full scope examination for different position during PSI and ISI period. At the same time, consider RPV component have high radiation, Therefore, RPV inspection machined usually was composed of different function parts, etc: mechanical and control part, Ultrasonic data acquisition and evaluation software. In the first, this article introduce how to choose and define some basic ultrasonic parameters, for example: choose probe frequency .define probe angle and for different depth use different focus probe to cover full sound path between 6dB focus length. Finally, preset a simple brief about typical function of ultrasonic data acquisition SW (MIDAS) and evaluation SW(MASERA).

Abstract: Commonly conventional techniques are helpless to measure wall thickness of equipment in line. However, with the advantage of wide frequency spectrum, strong penetration and longer attenuation, pulsed eddy current is very adaptable to measure wall thickness of metal in high or low temperature without insulation removal. The high-tech of PEC is becoming research focus of the world. As the practical insulation thickness different, so the lift-off between metal and probe is different. Researchers made many trials in order to know how lift-off influences measuring. Finally they found the relationship between lift-off and error, made quantitative analysis, established the formula of correcting data of inspection.

【AE027】Experimental study on Ultrasonic Guided Wave Inspection of Pipes Using the Magnetostrictive Sensor Technology

Abstract: The ability of ultrasonic guided wave inspection of pipes using the magnetostrictive sensor technology is studied experimentally. In the experiments, T(0,1) mode is excited and used for pipe inspection while the sensors are air-coupled to the pipes. The experimental results obtained in a 9.6-meter long pipe sample show that the echo signal still has high SNR after the T(0,1) mode guided wave propagating about 153.6 meters. T(0,1) mode at 64kHz is used in in-situ tests for two stream pipes, and the received signals show that the typical structures such as the welds, stents, elbows of the pipes can be well detected. The inspection range is about 13 meters and the location error is less than 150mm.

Abstract: After the processing by filtering and binarization of Eectronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) fringe image, it needs to extract and analyze the interference fringes information. It analyzes some ways of the stripes skeleton extraction based on mathematics morphologhy, such as thinning algorithm based on the hit-miss transform, improved mathematics morphologhy thinning and mathematical morphology skeleton extraction method. We can get the best results by improved mathematics morphologhy thinning.

Abstract: This article applies the technique to test the ferromagnetic material defects by use the analytical method of time slices. With the pulse exciting on the U-form magnetic yoke, the sensor array is settled by the two sides of magnetic yoke in linear distribution in order to test the changing of the magnetic field distributing caused by corrosion. Analysis of different depths corrosion accords to the correspondent relationship between response curve of rising time and the testing depth. The standard corrosion types in the test include square slot corrosion, skewed slot corrosion. According to the results of time slices to judge the status of the corrosion, which suggests this testing technique has certain recognition capability to identify various corrosion types compared to peak value testing.

Abstract: In this paper, a numerical study for vibration based lattice truss structural damage identification is presented. First, the validity of the numerical model is verified by comparing the calculated results with those of other researchers. Then, based on this model, vibration behaviors are simulated for delamination damages of different locations and different damage degree, and the relationship between delamination damage and natural frequencies and modal shapes is analyzed. The research results lay a foundation for the further study of the delamination damage inspection of lattice truss sandwich plate.

This paper describe the application of UT simulation technique in the ultrasonic testing of reactor pressure vessel (as an example, flange to shell weld), in order to illustrate the process of simulation on ultrasonic inspection and the results of simulation.

Abstract: one of fundamental features of Ultrasonic Phased Arrays (UPA) is the ability to focus and steer the propagating waves to a specific point within the load material by control a parabolic time delay of each element. Recently, the ultrasonic phased array technique has been demonstrated as an attractive method to NDT, making it successful in many industry and medical application. A phased array is a multi-element piezoelectric device, the elements of which are individually excited by electric pulses at programmed delay times. A numerical simulation model is established to investigate the influences of parameters of linear phased array transducers on beam steering based on the principle of ultrasonic phased array which will be basic results for UPA.

Abstract: Metal Magnetic Memory Testing(MMMT) is already used in both defect inspection of fenomagnatic structure and the stress concentration zone detecting inside the structure through inspection of magnetic leakage field in the geomagnetic field. The application of MMM in weld inspection is investigated. Through experiments, MMM signal of two samples in no stress and imposed load is gathered respectively, and carry on comparative analysis. The feasibility of wavelet packet energy spectrum used in magnetic memory testing of weld defects is analyzed. On the theoretical basis of wavelet packet transform, MMM signal is processed by wavelet packet decomposition and wavelet energy spectrum analysis. The feasibility of by the position of energy concentration to judge the area of defect is proved.

Abstract: It is difficult to detect corrosion in insulated pipeline in nondestructive testing (NDT), Pulsed magnetic flux leakage (PMFL) technique is used to detect corrosion. The detection ability of four sensor models are studied with finite element method, finally, the performance of sensor with the core in both sides are investigated by experiment, result shows that this sensor can be used to quantify the depth of corrosion.

Abstract: In the inspection on power plant boilers, the effective test for the fillet welds is of great importance. In this paper, aiming at the nondestructive test for the fillet welds in nozzle stubs of medium-pressure boilers in power plant, proper inspection samples and inspection methods are selected, which are more systematic, more general, and more orientated. Through experimental research and on-site validation, this methodology would be helpful for the improvements of inspection quality.

This paper introduced the method for executing automatic data analysis for steam generator tubes using Teddy ET acquisition and analysis software which imported from Spanish (Tecnatom Company) and gave an example of practical application.

Abstract: Tube to Safe-End joint in Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) belongs to Austenite-Ferrite type Dissimilar Weld. It is difficult to perform UT because of its coarse grain structure. Consider of deficient detectability of planar defect by angle longitudinal wave technical, a straight longitudinal wave technical which takes Safe-end as scanning surface is put forward based on Joint structure. Experiment and research indicate it has good detectability of planar defect which is vertical to the weld surface. This technical may be applied in manufacture stage of RPV Combining with angle longitudinal wave technical.

Abstract: Thermosonic imaging is a new kind method of NDE/T technology for detecting surface and subsurface cracks and defects. In the technology, the cracks (defects) will be heating under intensive ultrasonic pulses excitations due to both sides of the cracks have different vibration amplitudes and phases. In the experimental studies of the technology, it has been found that the cracks display obviously different temperatures (heat) while the ultrasonic excitation sources are located at different positions. On the other hand, based on the ultrasonic vibrations in plates a theoretical model is presented to calculate the vibrations of both sides of the cracks, and the amplitude and phase differences between the vibrations of both sides of the cracks are obtained, in which the harmonic components are considered. The results show that the differences are dependent on the relative directions and distances between the ultrasonic sources and the cracks. The amplitude and phase differences of both sides of the cracks determine the temperatures (heats) around the cracks. Finally, the results are analyzed and discussed, which show that the theoretical calculations are in agreement with that of the experimental measurements.

Abstract: Conventional ultrasonic NDT method is quite incompetence for the surface fatigue crack testing of in service rotary shaft. Considering the formation mechanism of the surface fatigue crack in rotary shaft and the propagation character of creeping wave in media, creeping wave is employed to the surface fatigue crack detection of in service rotary shaft. An experiment was carried out on a certain type of stepped rotary shaft for the testing of surface fatigue cracks. The result reveals that, this method is simple and efficient for the fatigue crack testing of in service rotary shaft, and it can be applied for the routine testing of in service rotary shaft.

Abstract: Edge is the most basic features of image. In the field of industrial detection, accuracy edge detection for infrared image can effective discovery the shape and the size of defects. In this paper, a weighted average to determine filter first, second Images median filtering, mean filtering and weighted mean filtering, and then detect the infrared image edge separately on Pre-filtering, after median filtering, mean filtering and weighted mean filtering by Canny and LoG operator. Results show that edge detection, edge detection for after weighted mean filtering by LoG operator can keep more edge information, fewer false edge and more accurate test results relatively.

The paper estimates the wearing situation of electric isolation valve in condenser by combining small-angle longitudinal-wave probe and 0º longitudinal-wave probe, expounds experimentation and process of testing, analyses and evaluates the situation of valves and pins of the seawater pipeline.

Considering the nature of the scratches ultrasonic inspection technique was established. Water-immerging inspection method was used to evaluate the depth of the scratches. Water-immersion testing method and its procedure were described. Analysis and evaluation were carried out for the pressure tubes scratched according to the results of inspection.

Abstract: In order to enhance sizing capability for a deep crack, a modified multiple exciting coil ECT inspection scheme is proposed and studied in this paper. The key idea is that, not only the amplitude, but also the phase of the excitation current in the two pairs (four) of exciting coils are adjusted to suppress the eddy currents on the surface of the inspection target. The numerical results reveal that the modified way gives some improvement of sizing capability for deep cracks.
